Building a tax-efficient investment portfolio in Switzerland
In Switzerland, distributed investment income (bond interest, stock dividends) is taxed at your marginal income tax rate (up to 41.5% in Geneva or Vaud), whereas capital gains realized on private wealth are 100% tax-exempt. Asset selection therefore directly dictates your net after-tax return.
Splitting vested benefit assets across two separate foundations
When leaving an employer or becoming self-employed, Swiss law allows you to transfer your 2nd pillar savings to two separate vested benefit foundations. This legal structure lets you withdraw the two accounts in different calendar years, significantly lowering progressive exit taxes.
Capital-gain-focused asset allocation with institutional fee structures
Replacing high-fee retail bank funds (TER > 1.5%) with transparent index and institutional mandates focused on tax-free capital appreciation.
Mortgage financing and indirect amortization (3rd pillar)
Comparison of mortgage rates across Swiss banks and insurers, paired with indirect amortization via Pillar 3a/3b to preserve full mortgage interest tax deductibility.
Franco-Swiss and international wealth structuring
Advisory for executives holding assets across both Switzerland and France (Franco-Swiss tax treaty, real estate wealth tax IFI, RSUs and cross-border estate planning).

Technical answers to your questions
To guarantee tax-free private capital gains treatment (and avoid reclassification as a professional securities dealer), ESTV Circular No. 36 sets 5 safe-harbor criteria: holding securities for at least 6 months, annual transaction turnover below 5x starting portfolio value, no margin/debt financing, capital gains not required to fund living expenses, and derivatives used solely for hedging.
Direct amortization reduces your deductible mortgage interest and increases your taxable net wealth each year. With indirect amortization via a pledged Pillar 3a account, your mortgage debt (and interest deduction) stays constant while your annual Pillar 3a contributions are 100% tax-deductible.
If you relocate outside the EU/EFTA, you can withdraw 100% of your 2nd pillar in cash. If you move to an EU/EFTA country (such as France) where you are subject to mandatory social security, you can immediately withdraw the extra-mandatory portion (or use the full amount for a primary residence), while the mandatory portion remains invested in a Swiss vested benefit account until retirement age.
