LPP pension buybacks 2026: reduce your taxes and strengthen your Swiss retirement
Voluntary 2nd pillar (LPP) pension buybacks are the single most powerful tax lever in Switzerland and for cross-border workers: 100% of the buyback is deductible from taxable income, generating an immediate 25% to 42% tax saving.
100%
Tax deductibility of the buyback amount (ICC, IFD and French income tax)
3 years
Statutory lock-up period before any lump-sum withdrawal (Art. 79b LPP)
20% max
Annual buyback cap during your first 5 years of affiliation in Switzerland
-8% CMU
For cross-border workers under CMU, LPP buybacks also reduce the CNTFS base
How do 2nd pillar (LPP) buybacks work and who qualifies?
A pension gap appears on your LPP certificate following salary increases, university studies, moving to Switzerland later in your career, career breaks or divorce. By filling all or part of this gap through a voluntary contribution before year-end, you reduce your taxable income dollar for dollar.
Three mandatory statutory rules to verify before making an LPP buyback
1) Any prior early withdrawal for home ownership (WEF/EPL) must be fully repaid first. 2) If you moved to Switzerland within the last 5 years and were never previously affiliated with an LPP fund, your annual buyback is capped at 20% of insured salary. 3) No lump-sum withdrawal may occur within 36 months of the buyback.
Multi-year buyback staggering strategy
Instead of contributing CHF 90,000 in a single year, splitting your buyback into three CHF 30,000 tranches across three consecutive tax years shaves off your highest marginal tax bracket every year.
Maximum effectiveness for both Swiss residents AND cross-border workers
For a Swiss resident or Geneva quasi-resident (TOU), the buyback is deducted on GeTax/VaudTax. For a cross-border worker taxed in France (Vaud, Neuchâtel, Basel), the buyback is deductible (up to 12 quarters) and reduces both French income tax and CMU contributions.
Verification of your pension fund's financial health and regulations
Audit of the fund's coverage ratio, extra-mandatory interest crediting, and rules governing the return of buyback capital in the event of death prior to retirement.

Technical answers to your questions
Most modern pension fund regulations stipulate that voluntary buybacks are paid out in full as a lump-sum death benefit to beneficiaries in addition to the surviving spouse's pension. However, we always verify this specific clause in your fund's regulations before you transfer funds.
To qualify for the current tax year, funds must be received and processed by your pension fund before its annual administrative cutoff date (typically between 30 November and 15 December).
Yes, as a general rule we recommend first maximizing the annual Pillar 3a ceiling (CHF 7,258) for investment flexibility, and then using LPP buybacks to eliminate higher marginal income tax brackets.
